Dreamscape stalling on renders
#1
hello,

we've encountered some problems for a while now with dreamscape stalling on some renders in the renderque
it seems to be mainly focused on the end of the dreamscape sea surface where it either transists into the infinite plane or where the adaptive mesh ends, we have however managed to find a "fix" to this problem using a slightly altered mesh offset but its hampering us from having care free network renders, and slows our rendering progress because we have to manualy resubmit frames that stalled out halfway and keep tweaking the mesh offset with minimal values till it will render.

With regards,
jeroen

Hello,

Can you please email me your scene ?
What 3ds max version and which renderer do you use ?

Thanks

I am running into the same problem. Max 2010 with relatively large, open sea surface. Was this problem ever addressed and, if so, what was the solution/workaround?

Cheers,

Hello Rodd,

So far I didn't get file to reproduce this error.
My suggestion would be that you use much bigger Degradation value and see if it works.

Follow up to this:
Files still hang relatively unpredictably. As I am in production I can't really do as detailed a troubleshooting process as one would prefer. Changing the degradation may help though at the cost of quality. What I was able to determine is that other settings (possibly?) are eliminating the problem, such as smaller overall mesh size and smaller grid spacing. I was surprised to find that I was making the mesh too large in order to compensate for odd looking water and horizon line issues. The above solutions made the mesh look better and no render hangs.

Hello,

Thanks for update.
I will be looking for a solution to this problem, and right now it
seems it might be related to Sea Material reflection/refraction.

hi, quick update.

we recently bought some i7 machine's and the problem seems to occur on our old q6600 machines only (these used to make up the majority of our renderfarm)

the new i7 machines handle the problem without a hich but the old Q6600 processors seem to choke sometimes still.

also yeah a larger degradation seemed to help a bit.

Hello Jeroen,

Thanks for update.
I have i720 here and earlier it was AMD Athlon 64 x2 3600 and no problems.
It might be something relate to CPU and threads, but that's hard to catch on different hardware.
