Big scale smoke stacks help
#1
Hey guys
I am wondering how can I make a smoke stack in fume that looks like its big scale?(i want to do those directional far away smoke columns you see in movies, that have very strong drag. Is there any setting to make my sims look bigger scale?

example, like these big smoke stacks at minute 2:10 in the distance(very slow moving look big scale) http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... TGRY_3583c

what about the drag? i applied drag but my smoke doesn't seem to be slowing down at all(or dissipating softly at the end Sad

if you can give me a few tips much appreciated

thanks

Hello Fabio,

I hope this tutorial might help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYVGVKu4pNI

hi thanks for the link.
however the tutorial doesnt explain how i can make the smoke dissipate as it life progresses into that nice kind of hazy smoke (dense at the beggining and hazy at the end) nor it explains how to slow down it as its life progresses(so not globally , as i want it to keep being fast as emitted but to slow it down as it floats up(drag)

i am trying to use the smoke dissipation density and strenght to get the smoke to die as it disperses but im getting sharp smoke instead of soft hazy one. any clue on how to get around this? Im also trying to dissipate or diffuse the temperature but doesnt seem to help much on this regard

thanks

Hello,

To slow it down, a small Velocity Damping value might help. For smoke dissipation, you could use Smoke Diffusion in combination with Dissipation.

hi thanks for the reply, but i still couldn't get my head around this.
I'm attaching a few screenshots of some of my attempts ( you can se the whole setup with wind settings, etc) and also a reference of what i want and with some lines showing what i pretend and cant really get.

maybe you can help me further.

thank you

still banging my head against the wall on this.
everytime i try to make my smoke change direction, it always does so in a very weird fashion. i tried using negative speed to attract, wind space warps, gravity vector(which makes it move right again so it doesnt work also)or particles shooting velocity and sometimes heat to make changes in trajectory, but to no avail.

for instance, the vulcano smoke, it starts rising upwards, but then gets a strong wind current(not to mention it loses its temperature) and immediatly changes direction after a certain altitude (so it kinda looks like an L shape rotated 90o degress)

any idea on how to achieve this? in my tests it always looks really weird and never natural at all.

ps: i also tried to use the particles to make the smoke follow, but always looks like spagetthi. even if vel is set to 0 so they would just follow the particles(which are affected by wind, while the fumefx sim in this case isnt)
