  pixelated gpu preview?
Posted by: catchyid - 06-11-2015, 03:09 PM - Forum: FumeFX [maya] - Replies (2)

hi,

i have a scene where objects have average dimensions of 5000 maya unit. in order to view objects, i position the camera such that it compensate the entire scene (i.e. it's positioned @ (9000, 7000, 7000)). In fumeFX I create smoke that is comparable to the scene size (e.g. a grid size could be 3000x3000x8000), however when I open the GPU preview window the smoke looks very pixelated? I have to zoom in a lot to see nice details, but when I do so I don't see the entire scene?! Any advise?

does force affect the simulation in "Default" Advection ?
Posted by: catchyid - 06-04-2015, 08:17 PM - Forum: FumeFX [maya] - Replies (2)

Hi,

I initially thought that in order for a force to effect a simulation, the advection type must be set to "Field" or "Field and Vel", however I've tested a scene with "Default" advection type and I can see the effect of the force?! If so, does FumeFX by default set advection type to "Field" when a field is attached to FumeFX node? Just another question : when we set advection type to "Field", what that really means: take forces into account when doing fluid simulation, right?

Thanks,

  General Simulation Questions
Posted by: catchyid - 05-31-2015, 07:22 PM - Forum: FumeFX [maya] - Replies (4)

Hi,

This is a generic question about FumeFX simulation. My biggest challenge in simulation is to choose the right simulation parameters such as : smoke dissipation, minimum dissipation density, emission rate, etc. For example, when I see lots of smoke in the scene that I want to eliminate, I increase dissipation rate, increase minimum dissipation density, however usually I get a result that is either lots of smoke is gone or still too much smoke, so I go back and keep changing different simulation values (such as advection stride, solver quality, CFL, noise,...) hoping that I will get the result I want. I've tried to use effectors as well to control the dissipation (e.g. cylinder effector that has radial multiplier turned on), however the effect was not that clear to notice. I've been using FumeFX for couple weeks now and I have been changing simulation parameters as I mentioned above, but unfortunately everyday I work very hard but I don't get the intended result.

Now my question here is: Is there any a methodological way to tackle these kinds of problems. For example, if there was a smoke density histogram, I can easily see where maximum/minimum densities are and then choose the right dissipation rate? Or maybe there is a certain technique that should be followed to achieve certain results.

BTW, I've watched many education resources on FumeFX, however most of them cover the meaning of the interface and its primitive (and most obvious) usage.

Thanks in advance,

  Blocking vs Non Blocking Simulation
Posted by: catchyid - 05-31-2015, 12:54 PM - Forum: FumeFX [maya] - Replies (3)

Hi,
I am doing a tornado simulation where I have particles rotating around Y axes and emit smoke only. I am simulating only smoke, i.e no fuel. I set smoke bouncy and temperature bouncy to zero, my grid size is 10x192x100. Pls see attached for more simulation settings. Finally note that there is volume axis force that just rotates the smoke around Y axes and and pushes smoke away from Y axes as well.

My question: If I set blocking sides to "none", then the simulation starts as expected, i.e. smoke building up rotating around Y axes for bit , however suddenly the smoke starts to move toward the center of the scene as if there was a pulling force at the center of the simulation that sucks smokes toward it?! However, if I set blocking to "both" this pulling toward the center behaviour does not occur.

I am not sure why this happens and why "blocking" creates this behavior?

Thanks,

  FumeFX 4.0 Release date?

I know you probably can't give an exact date, but is there a window of time until the release of version 4? This year? Next year?...

  Arnold rendering problems
Posted by: 3DNZ15 - 05-22-2015, 10:17 AM - Forum: FumeFX [maya] - Replies (12)

I'm trying to render with Arnold in Maya 2015 SP5 and nothing is happening. I've installed everything correctly, the license for Arnold shaders has been authorized and installed properly. The .dll seems to be in the correct place, but my render doesn't get to the render screen, it just stays blue.

See attached.

Any suggestions? I tried rendering a simple sphere with a spot light in Arnold and it works, so my install of Arnold is fine - it's not working FumeFX.

  Maya 2015 Ext 1 +SP5 - FumeFX 3.5.6 - Bugs
Posted by: Thomixioso - 05-22-2015, 09:42 AM - Forum: FumeFX [maya] - Replies (2)

After couple month of using Fume, I would like to mention couple of annoying bugs.

- Gpu preview still crashes, especially if you open it during simulation or not on frame 1.

- During simulation if you click on outliner and want to change some parameter on anything (fields for example) Outliner content dissapear and you cant select anything anymore, unless you stop simulation.

- Gpu preview doesnt refresh if you change ramps or anything on look of fume. So you change opacity and gpu preview doesnt refresh. You have to close and open it again.

-Make gpu preview often doesnt work, simply do nothing, i need to restart Maya then. This happening if you make preview on one scene, and then open another and want to create preview.

What I miss:

Faster rendering, for example include standard Maya render, like in Max - scanline.

edit:
- I need Gpu preview remain open, when I select something else in my scene. Now If I unselect fume, Gpu window dissapear.

Some help, how to make follow particles (with follow field) move exactly like fume velocities. I cant achieve same velocities even if i have conserve on 0, and mutliply magnitude in follow field.

Thank you, looking for next versions of great FumeFX plugin.

  vray & Illumination map
Posted by: ronald_a - 05-19-2015, 08:47 AM - Forum: FumeFX [maya] - Replies (3)

Hi,

I am testing lighting with fumefx (and vray) and I'm running into two issues:

- while lighting with spot and point lights, fumefx is super fast to render (using the illumination map). But using a directional light it becomes really slow (the difference for the illumation map calculation is 5.1 sec for two spotlights vs. 132.6 sec for one directional light). Is this normal behavior? Interestingly, a vray rectangular light "only" takes 57.7 seconds, which is still long, but a lot faster that the directional light.

- rendering with gi on, make the volume go black (at least in a particular test scene which I include and also contains the light setup discribed in the first point)

One point I should notice is, that we are on vray3 nightly builds, not on the original vray3 for maya build

Cheers,

Ronny

  trouble with wavelet sim
Posted by: ronald_a - 05-19-2015, 07:32 AM - Forum: FumeFX [maya] - Replies (34)

Hi,

I am having trouble with wavelet simulation. I have discussed this issue with Domagoj Korak via mail. To not repeat myself I am just going to paste in the communication I have had so far (blue is me, green is Domagoj):

so the problem is, that when I start the wavelet calculation, it renders the first frame and then just stays on the second (keeps calculating). I partially managed to fix the problem by getting rid of my maya settings (!) and then it works for some time, but this seems to come back once in a while (and I have to get rid of the settings again).

We are not sure what exactly is happening when you do wavelet turbulence simulation.
To do wavelet turbulence first you must simulate Default simulation first.
Also make sure that you set Extra detail to Wavelet Turbulence mode in your FumeFX Simulation rollout.
What OS do you have on your system?
By not rendering the frame are you meaning on preview window rendering?
In Output rollout in Fume UI what you have entered under Viewport Update?

I am aware of the procedure to do wavelet.
I am on windows 7, Maya 2015 ext 1 sp5.
By not rendering I mean doing simulation once I hit the simulate button on the fumefx shape. The simulation window pops open, it runs through frame 1, starts frame 2 and stays on frame 2 with cpus running. In that state I have to end maya with the task manager. Deleting maya settings, loading exactly the same scene with the same default cache, running wavelet again then works.
Is it possible that something is corrupting some fume fx setting in the mayasettings? Can you tell me where fumefx saves it settings (like default path etc.).
So just to clarify: It does work now because I have deleted my mayasettings. The problem just came back within a few hours – but its fixable by just deleting the settings again. If there is a ways I could find out what causes the problem that would be preferred though.

Which version of FumeFX you have on your machine?
Please go to wavelet folder and see does FumeFX saves wavelet cache files after the calculating stops.
How many memory you have on your system?
Please go to Fume UI and take a screenshot of General Parameters and Output rollout.
Thank you for your cooperation.

so I am on the latest 3.5.7 (btw. my maya is 2015 ext1 sp6 (not sp5) while the other machine we tried on was 2015 sp3)
As it currently works, I can’t test out if there are files written. I did however do that test when the problem was there and it wrote the first frame (FumeFX_wt_0001.fdx) and then a frame without framenumber (FumeFX_wt_.fdx) but did not write the second frame.
32 GB, memory should not be an issue, because I tested it with the standard container, standard simple source, standard wavelet settings – and it worked with exactly that scene when I got rid of the maya settings.

Up until now I couldn't send a problematic scene and I thought it was related to my maya settings, but now I have a scene that doesn't seem to do wavelet sim. I am also on 3.5.8 now.

Please find it attached.

Batch rendering gives me black frames after 15-20 frames?
Posted by: peterhartwig - 05-18-2015, 08:20 AM - Forum: FumeFX [maya] - Replies (3)

Hey there

I'm having an issue which i cant seem to find a solution to. When i render my sims through deadline, i get the first 15-20 frames looking great, but fir the rest, there's no fume? My logs do not have any errors pertaining to fumefx, so i have no idea how to troubleshoot this.

Deadline 7
Maya 2015
Windows 8.1
Vray 3
Fumefx

Just rendering on my workstation, using deadline to cue up renders, so no network
