  Multiple scattering with Arnold
Posted by: mattv - 05-15-2017, 05:38 PM - Forum: FumeFX [maya] - Replies (2)

Has anyone else had difficulty getting Multiple Scattering to work with Arnold renderer? I've tried some really high values but am unable to get it working in my renders. I did not see any specific Arnold render settings in the render settings window other than increasing the volume indirect AA samples and the volume ray depth. I've tried various values there as well with no success.

This is an example side-by-side of MentalRay (in Maya 2015) vs Arnold (in Maya 2017) with the same settings. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

  FFX Caches & Initial State
Posted by: jlelievre - 05-12-2017, 01:39 PM - Forum: FumeFX [max] - Replies (2)

I am playing around with the Initial State sim mode and had a request... Currently if I do a primary sim, cache it out, set one of those .fxd files as my initial state, and then run an Initial State sim, it writes over my primary sim cache. Is it possible to have Fume create a new directory and write out a "Initial State Cache" similar to what Default,Wavelet, and Post do?

How can I see which version of FumeFX I have installed?
Posted by: vtrockin - 05-06-2017, 12:18 AM - Forum: FumeFX [maya] - Replies (4)

I can't find an "About" or "Info" on Maya in Windows 7 to see what version of FumeFX I have installed - is there an easy way to tell?

Thanks

Fume grid showing up as black box in mental ray (again)
Posted by: Mr.Blank - 04-21-2017, 09:01 PM - Forum: FumeFX [max] - Replies (8)

Hi,
I am working on a scene with fumefx and mental ray and everything was working fine. The fire showed up in reflection in mental ray materials. The background was working fine with the mental ray Environment/background switcher.

So I upped the resolution of the FumeFx simulation, waited, waited and waited and then rendered and there was the fume grid showing up in reflections and showing up as a black box in the render.
The only thing I changed in the scene was the spacing in FumeFx. Nothing else.
Why is this problem still happening and how do I resolve it once and for all?

I have tried re-simming, I have tried deleting fume grid and making a new one and then re-simmed, I have tried moving the grid along z-axis and then y- and x-axis. I have tried moving the ffx particle source out of the grid. None of that helped.

I am using FumeFx 3.5.5 and 3d max 2014 64-bit.

See the attached rendered images of the same frame (again only difference in scene file is the Spacing in Fumefx).

  Particle Scale/Color Over Time Problems
Posted by: Mike Truly - 04-21-2017, 05:57 PM - Forum: AfterBurn - Replies (10)

OK, I updated to AB 4.2.2 but it did not solve the scale/color over time problems I'm having in AB.

I'm trying to do a fire/smoke setup like the AB Tut3 tutorial.

If I do the AB Tut3 tutorial regarding the explode daemon, all works as expected... the particles grow from small to large over their lifetime. Likewise, the color changes over the lifetime from fire to smoke (orange to black).

But in my actual scene setup, (if I turn on the 'Show in Viewport' button) and scroll through the animation... the particles never seem to change size. Also regarding changing color, when copying the exact steps that were used in Tut3, the particles never switch to orange early in life to black late in life.

These are not exotic setups at all... at this point, I am just mimicing the steps used in Tut3.

(I am trying to make a simplified scene that shows my problems but haven't had success yet as when I do a 'Save Selected' from the actual scene, the resulting scene has a wacked PFlow setup... trying to get this sorted).

Any idea what I'm doing wrong when trying to mimic Tut3?

Thanks!

Mike Truly

  AfterBurn 4.2.2 Install Hassles
Posted by: Mike Truly - 04-20-2017, 08:19 PM - Forum: AfterBurn - Replies (11)

Win7/MAX2014

I am returning to using AB after a long absence. I am having some problems with AB and decided to check for updates. I was running version 4.1.something and saw there was a 4.2.2 update. I decided to install the latest version to see if it resolved my problems.

(In years past, I thought the updates were in easy EXE installers). Using Control Panel>Programs, I uninstalled the Afterburn 4.1.something version.

I downloaded the 4.2.2 zipfile and extracted it. I saw a TXT file with instructions indicating copy these files here, those files there, etc. I did that.

Now when I start the AfterFLICS_tools.exe, it shows a license for AfterBurn 4.1.3 (shouldn't it show 4.2.2?).

I start MAX2014 and create some AB stuff... all seems to work fine and shows AB 4.2.2. But when I go to try to open the AB tutorials... they are now gone. And AB no longer shows as installed in Programs.

How do I get all my AB tutorials and sample files back? Do I have to install the older AB 4.1.something version EXE again and then do the 4.2.2 update without uninstalling the 4.1.?

What do I need to do on all the render nodes to get the 4.2.2 installed?... just the copying described in the TXT file?

Thanks!

Mike Truly

  Particle Source - Smoke
Posted by: jlelievre - 04-20-2017, 05:20 PM - Forum: FumeFX [max] - Replies (2)

I was curious how the particle source works when a simulation is simmed. If I sim out a particle source with the smoke channel enabled vs disabled, I get two different results for the fire. Is there a way for the smoke to be simmed based solely on the fire? So if I were to change the amount of smoke it created it would have no effect on the fire?

  Vray Render creates jittery movement
Posted by: Bent_Image - 04-07-2017, 12:02 AM - Forum: FumeFX [max] - Replies (5)

The looks correct with scanline, but in Vray, the entire sim will jitter ever few frames for a single frame. It looks like it mostly jumps downward for a second maybe an inch or so, then jumps back to the correct position. Every seen that behavior before with Vray?
