| Network sim and rendering questions |

I'm bumping into issues sending out sim and render jobs to render slaves.
- It happened that when i sent for say 250 to be simulated on a render slave, the sim would crash at frame 240 for instances, so almost completed... Deadline/BackBuner will requeue the task and unfortunately FumeFx does not "resume" the job and start the sim again from frame 240... it starts from scratch again over and over again, crashing at the same frame eventually or an other. Not sure why the crash occurs, i think it's a "time out" problem which might be resolved by now. But i would like to know how to force FumeFX to "resume" sims on a render slave.
- Also, bit of a noob's question, but can anyone please dissect the workflow to use the "illumination map" and "Multi-Scattering", cause so far, i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong but it's what's eating the most render time on the jobs.
- Also, I'm not sure why, but as soon as i drop a Void Src in a sim, almost everything disappears?! And i had in mind that it was just making the sim process lighter by skipping the unused area of the grid (the one the void source covers).
PS: please don't ask me for a file, i'd appreciate you throwing some ideas in here, i can't send a file at this time
Cheers,
A.

I made a few simulations for my current project and i'm bumping into render issues. I send out everything to the renderfarm, all seems to go well, until i realize some frames (so far each time a single frame out of the whole sim) does not render. It just hangs, and it keeps trying and trying over and over, never finishing the job. I believe it has to do with reflections, i'm setting on a fire highly reflective chrome object. Any advises over which settings to use with FInalRender to ease the process of FFX atmos with reflections and refractions? I'm not using GI here. Any known settings with the Raytracing accelerator?
Thanks for replying soon, this one's being a real pain at the moment
Cheers,
A.
PS: I notice now rendering it locally that it crashes max when building the illumination pass of FumeFX.

| Use maps as target for smoke? |

Hey guys,
i'm trying to recreate movie posters (pictures) with smoke, the concept is smoke coming out of a Oil Lamp (jin lamp....Aladdin lamp) and it spreads to shape into part of movie posters. Is there any way to to use black and white maps at least as target for the smoke or to restrict a bit the path of the smoke to specific areas defined by a map that could be projected onto simple geometry to get enough depth while still keeping the realistic dynamic properties of the smoke?
So far i'm stuck at simulating the smoke using 3d geometries, either as collision objects or as emitters, but it's obviously not as flexible as if i could use a map i can create a lot more easily than recreating my movie posters with modeling 3d geometries! :$
Any idea or suggestions are welcome !
Cheers,
Adriano

I have simulated the default and wavelet without problems but when I try to retime/optimize it it max crashes every time. I do not think it is lack of memory, the simulation is not that highres. The largest WT file is 91 934 KB and I have 12gb ram and i7 920 quadcore processor.
I have attached the max scene. Could someone please take a look at it and see if you can figure out what is wrong?
Gratefull for any help
